Week-1
Sep 3 (Sat) Milwaukie-Lake Oswego-Oregon City Loop - Class C
This ride heads north from Milwaukie and crosses the Willamette River on new the Tilikum Crossing,
whereupon we then take our bikes up the elevator to the Gibbs St. Pedestrian Bridge.
We then head south through Lake Oswego, Marylhurst, and West Linn before crossing the
Willamette again on the Arch Bridge as we enter Oregon City. From there, we make our way to the bike/ped bridge
over the Clackamas River at Cross Park in Gladstone before heading back to Milwaukie on the Trolley Trail.
Total distance is approximately 32 miles, with cumulative elevation gain about 1,500 feet.
Optional lunch in downtown Milwaukie after the ride. Contact leader for more information.
Meet: 9:00 AM at Milwaukie Riverfront Park, McLoughlin Blvd and Washington St. (there is a traffic signal.)
From the north, enter the parking lot on the next driveway after the signal.
Coming from the south, take the turn lane before the Washington St. signal.

Sep 6 (Mon) Independence/Buena Vista Bike Ride—Class B
Bike 28-30 miles through the fields, rolling hills and farmland of Polk
County. The ride starts at the Independence Riverview Park, Independence,
Oregon. We ride west through Monmouth, south to Helmick State Park and east
to the Buena Vista Ferry landing for a lunch stop along the Willamette River.
We then ride north to Independence to complete the loop.
Driving Directions:
From Portland drive I-5 South towards Salem. Take the Salem Parkway Exit,then
W on Hwy 22 over the Willamette River to Hwy 51. Go south to 200 S Main St
in Independence. The park is on the left. Turn left toward the river. Parking
is north of the boat ramp parking.
Depart: 10:00 AM Independence Riverview Park.

Sep 7 (Wed) Morning Hike – Class A/B
We begin our hike at 9:30 am and hike 4 to 6 miles, for 2 to 4 hours, somewhere
in the Portland metropolitan area, often in Forest Park. We then have lunch
at a nearby cafe.
This week we will hike in Powell Butte Nature Park, 16160 SE Powell Blvd.
Please park in the lot at the top of the hill near the visitors’ center, ready to depart at 9:30 AM.

We will hike from 6 pm until 8 PM-ish in Forest Park and the West Hills in two groups:
Class A: Approximately 4-5 miles with less than 500 foot elevation gain.
Class B: Approximately 6 miles with 500 - 800 foot elevation gain (not cumulative).
Depart: 6 PM sharp! from Wallace

Sep 8 (Thu) Willamette Park to Zoo and Back Bike Ride - Class A+
We'll ride from Willamette Park downtown to Goose Hollow, MAX up to the Zoo and ride back
down to Willamette Park. Most of the ride is on city streets and there are a bunch of hills,
both up and down (so this is a fair bit harder than my usual rides, but I promise to go slowly
and/or wait on the hills). Between 15-20 miles. Bring $$ and/or a ticket for the MAX ride.
We’ll probably go somewhere for lunch after the ride.
I don’t ride in the rain or the excessive heat, so please check with me if the weather seems iffy.
Meet: 9:45 am for a 10 am departure, in front of Fulton Pub at 0618 SW Nebraska St.,
near the entrance to Willamette Park. There should be parking on Nebraska St. or other side streets,
but you may have to look around.

Sep 9-10 (Fri-Sat) Jefferson Park Exploratory Backpack Class B
We’ll access Jefferson Park from the Whitewater Trail on the west side of Mount Jefferson.
Our hike in will be approximately 6 miles or so one way with approximately 2000 feet of elevation gain.
Jefferson Park is well known for its scenery. Once we get to Jefferson Park, we’ll explore the area
for the best campsites (Scout or Russel Lake?), and set up camp and explore some more if we wish.

This is day 1 of Coast and Hood Double Hike and Fun Weekend.
We will have lunch in Manzanita and a stop-off at Short Sands.
Distance: 3 miles round trip. Elevation Gain: 840 feet.
Return to town about 5 PM, cannot guarantee return time.

This is day two of the Coast and Hood Double Hike and Fun Weekend.
We will eat lunch and relax at Timberline lodge.

Sep 12 (Mon) Bike ride from Monmouth – Class B or C
This will be a counter-clockwise loop to the north and west of Monmouth.
We’ll head N, then W to Dallas, with a stop in the Dallas City Park.
After leaving the park, there will be an optional out-and-back leg of 8 miles and 700’ elevation gain.
As we turn south, there will be a short but healthy climb on our way to our next rest stop at the
Dallas cemetery. Once we turn E back toward Monmouth, we’ll have another decent climb and some s
mall rolling hills. Distance: 30 or 38 miles. Elevation gain: 1300 or 2200’.
Rest room & water at start, 10.5 miles, and 17 or 25 miles.
Depart: Parking lot of Monmouth Recreational Park, on N. Hogan Rd. Contact leader for start time.

Sep 14 (Wed) Morning Hike – Class A/B
We begin our hike at 9:30 am and hike 4 to 6 miles, for 2 to 4 hours, somewhere

This week we will hike to Council Crest park.
There are no restrooms at the beginning of the hike, and none until more than halfway through.
There are restrooms at the bottom of the hill at Vista and Burnside.
Lunch will be at the Vista Springs Café, 2440 SW Vista Ave, Portland, OR 97201
which is a block from the start of the hike.
Depart: 9:30 AM at the intersection of SW Spring and SW 18th.

Enjoy late summer on the mountain and be surprised by the menu of a good home cooked dinner at Tyee.
Breakfast will be provided on Sunday morning for those staying the night.

Sep 18 (Sun) Outings Planning Meeting
Trails Club members interested in participating in Club Outings in 2017
are invited to attend an Outings planning meeting at the home of Susan Green
and Gregg Baker. Bring your ideas and suggestions for all types of outings:
a) traditional pack-in Alpine Outings b) Car camp outings c) Destination
camp outings. You should research Alpine areas you want to pack into and
packers we can hire, car camping areas where a cook tent and camp can be
set up to day hike from and areas like Big Creek Camp or NatureBridge where
housing and meals are provided. Destination camps and packers get reserved
early so it is important to get moving on your outing ideas.
People who are interested need to participate in the planning and organization
of outings or they ain't gonna happen!

Sep 20-22 (Tue – Thu) Cairn Basin Backpack - Class B
We’ll start from the Top Spur TH nd soon reach the PCT and then Timberline
Tr. We’ll view the W side of Mt Hood from atop Bald Mtn, then head up the
ridge toward McNeil Pt. We’ll follow the trail to the north side of the mountain
and set up our camp for two nights in the Cairn Basin area. On Wed, we’ll
explore; possibilities include Elk Cove, Wy’East Basin, Barrett Spur, Eden
Park, and McNeil Pt. On Thu, we will head back to our vehicles. Travel under
full packs will be about 5 miles on Tue & Thu, with about 1600’ of elevation
change. Bring footgear for possible wet stream crossings. There may be some
XC travel if the group approves.

Sep 21 (Wed) Morning Hike – Class A/B
We begin our hike at 9:30 am and hike 4 to 6 miles, for 2 to 4 hours, somewhere
in the Portland metropolitan area, often in Forest Park. We then have lunch
at a nearby cafe.
This week we begin our hike, ready to depart at 9:30 AM, at the Old Spaghetti Factory,
0715 SW Bancroft St Portland, OR 97239. Please do NOT park in the yellow-lined spaces,
only park in spaces marked with white lines.
The hike's a bit longer than normal -- 5.6 miles -- so don't expect to be done before 12 - 12:30pm.
There is 500 feet of elevation gain in the first two miles of the hike.
Lunch will be at the Spaghetti Factory after the hike.

Sep 24-25 (Sat-Sun) Tyee Work Party
Join us at Tyee for a weekend sprucing up Tyee and getting it ready for
winter. Chores that we need to complete are: Finish/winterize the front porch,
checking all plumbing for drips and leaks, making sure we have enough necessary
consumables (hot chocolate, coffee, tea, sugar and such), check the winter
trails and ropes, check wood supply and general cleaning around the lodge.
If we have time, we can explore a local trail.
Lodge will open at 8:30 Saturday.

We will start at the beginning of the Wildwood Trail and go up into Hoyt Arboretum,
eventually making our way back to the zoo parking lot.
