Week-1

June 1 (Wed) Morning Hike – Class A/B

We begin our hike at 9:30 am and hike 4 to 6 miles, for 2 to 4 hours, somewhere in the Portland metropolitan area, often in Forest Park. We then have lunch at a nearby cafe.
This week's hike will begin at Friendly House at NW Thurman and 26th.

June 1 (Wed) Evening Hike – Class A/B

We will hike from 6 pm until 8 PM-ish in Forest Park and the West Hills in two groups:
Class A: Approximately 4-5 miles with less than 500 foot elevation gain.
Class B: Approximately 6 miles with 500 - 800 foot elevation gain (not cumulative).

June 5 (Sun) Silverton, a loop of the Petal Pedal Course - Class B

This ride will be a 29 mile loop of rolling hills and flat land over rivers and through lush green farmland. Don't be shy if you're not fully in shape yet.
Those who wish can have lunch at Seven Brides after the ride and we can stop at Williamette Pie at the ten mile mark to buy a personal sized pie if we all decide to.

June 5 (Sun) Canoe Class on moving water and water rescue

Alder Creek has agreed to put on a moving water and water rescue class for a small group of people. Currently we have 2 openings. Cost is $50. per person for a 4 hour class. Equipment and canoes provided.

June 5-6 (Sun-Mon) Tyee Open / Membership hike

Charlie Adams and Celine Stroinski will open Tyee at noon Sunday, June 5, 2016. Lodge will be open Sunday to take advantage of Mazama dinner and speaker. Dinner will not be served Sunday night at Tyee.
A Leisurely membership hike of 4 to 6 miles will start at noon at the Summit parking area near the restrooms. TCO sign will be visible. Please call ahead. Monday morning there will be a quick healthy breakfast at Tyee and the lodge will close by noon.
Mazama Lodge is having a no hosting dinner Sunday evening and Speaker Mike Cafferata, District Forester for the Forest Grove District of the ODF will talk about the Salmonberry Trail, Link from the Valley to the Coast. Please make your own dinner reservations with Mazama Lodge.

June 9 (Thur) Peninsula Park to Pier Park Bike Ride - Class A

Please join me for an easy ride around North Portland. 15 miles round trip, flat, mostly on residential, low traffic streets. Bring a lunch for a picnic at Pier Park. Please make sure your tires are pumped. There should be beautiful roses at Peninsula Park. Call my cell if the weather is iffy—I don’t ride in the rain!
Depart: 10 AM at the corner of N Ainsworth St. and N Borthwick Ave at the south end of Peninsula Park.

June 10 (Fri) Willamette Valley Bikeway - Class A/B

This ride will utilize the Willamette Valley Scenic Bikeway south of Champoeg State Park. There are two routes with same beginning and end pieces, with the longer route adding 16 additional miles in the middle. The route is largely flat on rural roads with scenic distant views of the Cascade foothills. The shorter ride is 27 miles and the longer one is 43 miles. E-mail leader to indicate that you are planning to ride ( the ride may be rescheduled if weather is poor ), which length ride you plan to do, and for directions to the start point.

June 11 (Sat) Milwaukie to Oregon City Bike - Class A

We will start at the SE Park Ave. MAX Orange Line station, head down River Road to Gladstone, cross the Clackamas River on the bike/ped bridge at Cross Park, and then continue to downtown Oregon City. We will return to Milwaukie via the Trolley Trail. Total distance is approximately 20 miles, with a few short hills. About 60% of the ride is on streets, 40% on dedicated bike path. Optional lunch in downtown Milwaukie after the ride.
Meet: 10 AM at SE Park Ave. MAX Station, SE Park Ave. & SE McLoughlin Blvd. in Milwaukie. Parking is available in the Park & Ride garage.

June 11-12 (Sat-Sun) Icicle Creek Backpack - Class C

Icicle Creek Back pack up Icicle Creek in WA outside of Leavenworth. Total Miles: 20. Elevation gain: 3000 feet. We will meet Friday evening and camp in Campsite at Eight Mile Creek to prepare for our AM BP. Goal will be Lake Margaret for Saturday night and come down Chatter Creek. You will need three season tent, shoe spikes and Ice AX. You will need a Forest Pass to park overnight. Limit 8.

June 11-12 (Sat-Sun) Nesika AYM weekend

Nesika Lodge will be open the weekend of June 11-12 from 9 AM Saturday to 2 PM Sunday. We're hosting for a group of Mazamas and we will be talking about backpacking skills but leaving time for a day hike, board games and great food! Trails Club members and guests are welcome. Normal lodge fees apply.

June 13 (Mon) Bike ride from Jefferson - Class B

We’ll ride a mis-shapened figure 8 out of Jefferson. We’ll head NE toward Turner, pedal S to Marion, then head W (crossing our earlier route) thru Ankeny National Wildlife Refuge, before returning E & SE to Jefferson. Bring plenty of water, none along the route. Restrooms at start and mile 12. 37.9 miles, 1021’ elevation change.
Depart: Parking lot of Jefferson School District, next to park, 1328 N 2nd St, Jefferson, OR, on Hwy 164 just S of Talbot Rd SE. Contact leader for start time.

June 19 (Sun) Tour de Westside Ride - Class B

We will ride a 22 mile loop with about 1200ft CEG. through the westside bergs of Beaverton, Tigard, Tualatin and Sherwood. Some of the ride will be on multi-use paths and some on roads. Driving distance from Pioneer Square to the starting point is about 12 miles/25 mins. Bring plenty of water and snacks. We could stop for lunch or sweets in Sherwood. June 22 (Wed) ) Evening Hike, 3 hour Triple Crown – Class C

We will hike from 6 pm until 9 PM-ish, first to Council Crest, then past the Zoo to Hoyt Arboretum and finally to Pittock Mansion. This is a timed hike; we will keep a steady pace of 3+ miles per hour in order to finish before dark. Please bring water and snacks; dress for the weather; carry a flashlight or headlamp. Approximately 9 miles with about 1800 foot elevation gain (not cumulative).

June 24-26 (Fri-Sun) Tyee Work Party

Hi Fellow TCO Members. It’s time for the Tyee spring spruce up. We are fortunate to have Christine Olsen cooking for us this work party. (always lead with food).
Here are some of the tasks for the work party:

  • Test Emergency Lights
  • Test Smoke Alarms
  • Test Fire Hoses
  • Check Fire Extinguisher certifications
  • Check roof damage
  • Check for leaks in attic
  • Clean stove and oven
  • Clean refrigerator
  • Clean cabinets in kitchen and supply room
  • Check Decon traps
  • Re-stock wood
  • Wash windows
  • Remove storm windows
  • Burn pile
  • Spray for ants
  • Take down Avalanche signs
  • Check bridges for soundness (lower bridge needs re-inforcing).
  • Check rope along trail.

June 24th-26th (Fri-Sun) Nesika Work Trip

We will be getting the staging done for the roofing in July. We will need all able bodied workers for June and July. We would like to try to get the roof on in one weekend. We will have a contractor in July who has donated his time to the coordination of the roofers. We are set up for OSHA and safety. I need people experienced in rock climbing to man the ropes and who have harnesses. I have purchased staging brackets for side of building, toe boards for roof and belay brackets for roof top to rope into.
We will be continuing work on the front deck preparing to pour an new front porch later this summer.
We will continue with trail clearing. We invite families, non-members and members including children to our work trips.
The upper gate will be open on Friday at noon and Saturday AM at 9:00 AM. Be prompt.

June 24th-26th (Fri-Sun) McKenzie River Outing

June 25 (Sat) McKenzie River Waterfalls/Clear Lake Hike - Class B

Join the group from the Trails Club McKenzie River Outing for this gorgeous 7.5 mile (optional 8.5 mile) hike with 200 ft or less elevation gain. We’ll view Sahalie Falls on the McKenzie River, then hike along the river to Clear Lake and complete the 5 mile loop around the lake, rest at Great Springs (the headwaters of the McKenzie River) and have lunch at Clear Lake Lodge. At the end of the hike, those who want to view breathtaking Koosah Falls will be lead downriver about ½ mile and back to the parking lot. Bring lunch, lots of water, sunscreen and a hat, as half of the hike around Clear Lake is in direct sun.
Depart: 10:30 am near the restroom at Sahalie Falls parking lot between mileposts #5 and #6 on Hwy 126, which is east from Eugene about 65 miles, or from Salem go 80 miles SE on OR 22 then about 5 miles S on Hwy 126.

June 27 (Mon) Bike ride from McMinnville to Amity – Class C

We’ll start from McMinnville City Park. The route heads generally southwest through farm land along lightly-traveled rural roads. Then we’ll head east for our lunch stop in the park in Amity. Our return to McMinnville starts with a loop to the north and then meanders through more farmland. We’ll pedal along roads such as Peavine, Muddy Valley, and River Bend, and do a little climbing on Youngberg Hill (rolling hills) and McCabe Chapel. 42 miles, 1100’ elevation.

Rescheduled from June 23 due to rain

Through Champoeg Park on bike trails and on to country roads with a destination of the Heirloom Rose Garden on Riverside Road near the Willamette River in the St. Paul area. We often see and hear the ospreys on this ride, it has some gently rolling hills and will be most enjoyable at a leisurely pace. This ride is just short of 25 miles. Ice cream at the end of the ride.
