Gentle Reminders provides explanation of hike difficulty and hike guideline. Detail description of common meeting is available at Meeting Places.

Week-1

July 2 (Wed) Morning Hike – Class A/B

We hike 4 to 6 miles, for 2 to 4 hours, usually in Forest Park, then lunch at a nearby cafe. If you would like to know the distance or difficulty of the hike, call the leader.

July 2 (Wed) Evening Hike – Class B

We will hike approximately 6 miles in Forest Park and the West Hills with 500 foot elevation gain (not cumulative).

July 3 (Thu) North Portland-Kelley Point Park Bike Ride - Class A

Moderately-paced, flat ride with a number of stops through North Portland. Bring a lunch for a picnic at Kelley Point Park. Total mileage around 20 miles. Please make sure your bike tires are pumped before you come. Call or email with questions. I don’t ride in the rain, so if weather is iffy, call my cell to check if ride is a go.
Meet: University of Portland, 5000 N. Willamette Blvd, 9:45 am for a 10 am departure. Come in the main entrance off of Willamette Blvd and make the first right. Parking lot is right next to the soccer center.

July 4-6 (Fri-Sun) Nesika 4th of July

Come enjoy the Holiday at Nesika. We will do a 4th of July cookout on Friday afternoon about 2 PM. Come and enjoy this special place for 1, 2, or 3 days. The lodge will close after breakfast on Sunday. Meet Friday at MP 10 on Larch Mountain Road at 10 AM Please let Nancy know when you register if you need to come through the gate at 10 AM, and give her a cell phone number. Randy Dietrich has volunteered to open the gate. If you would like to come in Saturday morning, we can schedule another opening. Let us know if you have a key, are coming in on Saturday, so we can coordinate a time for you to bring others in with you. Another option is to hike up from Multnomah Falls for the day or overnight. Several hikes are planned. Come for the fun, games, and camaraderie in the great outdoors! Bring a guest!
Overnight fee for members is $10, guests $15, per night. Food costs are $7 for dinner, lunch $5, and $3 for breakfast. Day lodge fee $2 in addition to meals for people not staying overnight. Nancy Overpeck and Ann Dudley are the cooks.

Week-2

July 7-9 (Mon-Wed) Olympic National Park Wilderness Beach Exploratory Backpack - Class B

We’ll explore the wilderness beach along the Washington Coast in the Olympic National Forest from Third Beach to Toleak Point, just south of La Push. The plan will be to take two nights and the three days picking the best places to camp. Total mileage to Toleak Point is 6 ½ miles with short climbs of around 250 feet over headlands, approximately 13-14 miles total. Parts of the trails over these headlands are steep climbs using rope ladders, and bear canisters are required for food/scented items. We should find the way scenic, and will take our time, using tide tables to plan our hiking around headlands.

July 8 (Tue) Lake Oswego Historical Bike Tour - Class B

This special ride will focus on the historical neighborhood of our own Trails Club members Ann Marie Dudley and Ralph Rogers whose relatives were instrumental in the development of Lake Oswego. We will spend time in the Lake Oswego area viewing some of the significant landmarks. Length 25 miles with a ride on the “Trolley Trail,” across the Oregon City bridge, through West Linn, Lake Oswego, Tryon Park and back to the Sellwood Riverfront Park via the Sellwood Bridge.

July 12-13 (Sat-Sun) Tyee Work Party

Come join us at the JulyTyee Work Weekend. Projects include remolding the Men’s restroom, replacing kitchen floor, Spring cleaning, moving wood and several odd jobs that need to be accomplished this Summer. Let Paul Snively, Work Party Chair know what projects you would like to work on. Kathy Pollock will be cooking delicious meals for us. Sign up for the weekend or for the day.

July 13 (Sun) Banks to Vernonia Bike Ride -- Class A or B

We will start at the Banks Trailhead and ride to Vernonia on a paved bike/walking/horse path. The trail was built on a former railroad bed, and passes through beautiful forested land. There is a 7 mile uphill section with one short steep hill. The rest is mainly flat or downhill. We will eat lunch at Vernonia Lake and return along the same path, 44 miles round trip. There are also 2 other trailheads to start from. One shortens the ride to 30 miles, and the other to 20 miles.

Week-3

July 14-20 (Mon-Sun) Red Pass in Montana to Hwy 15 backpack

Approximately 60.2 miles on the CDT. We will leave for drive to Montana on Monday July 14th after July work trip and spend the night close to trail head on Hwy 15 in Montana. Next AM we will drive to Red Pass and hike north/northwest for 60 miles to Hwy 15. There is some great 9500 high points in this section. We will carry food for 5 days. Daily milage approximately 12 miles. We will hang food as there are bears in this area. Must be able to get out of bed early and on the trail. Will need to ensure good equiptment and backpack knowledge base. Will help those as needed to ensure equiptment needs are met.

July 19 (Sat) Lower Twin Lake Family Hike - Class A

Pack up your babies and grab the old ladies and everyone come. Cross-generational hike led at a kid-friendly pace to a beautiful lakeside lunch spot. Please contact Tyee lodge host if you would like to extend the day to include supper and/or lodging.
Hike: 5 miles w/ 700' (cumulative) elevation gain
Drive: 100 r/t miles

July 19 (Sat) Two Bridges Interstate Bike Ride - Class A

This is a 20-mile ride with a few steep but very short hills. 75% of the ride is on bike paths, 25% in residential neighborhoods. We will ride north from Delta Park across the I-5 bridge bike path then ride through Washington to the I-205 path and return along Marine Drive back to Delta Park. I ride between 8-12 miles an hour depending on the wind. This ride is about enjoying bicycling and each others' company and we will be taking our time so don't let the distance deter you. I ride rain or shine.

Two of our favorite cooks, Karen and Roger Anderson will cook a delicious chicken dinner just before our week at Tyee. Guests welcome! Cost for dinner and breakfast is $10, dinner only $7. Day fee $2 if you are not staying overnight. See below for the following weeks’ events. Make your plans now!

July 20-25 (Sun-Fri) Tyee Lodge - OPEN Summer Camp for Adults Cancelled

Tyee Lodge (Trails Club of Oregon) will be open Sunday July 20 at 10 AM through Friday July 25 at noon. Barbara Jones is planning a hike / activity for each day. Socializing and games are planned for the evening. Guests can sign up for lodging and meals for one to five days during that time.
Meals: Sunday dinner, Monday thru Thursday- breakfast and dinner, Friday breakfast. Bring your own lunches or eat available leftovers. Cost per day: $20 TCO members, $25 for non-members. Lodge has 2 dorms with bunk beds– men’s & women’s. Register early for a bottom bunk. Bring sleeping bag, toiletries, towel and washcloth. Shower available. No alcoholic beverages at lodge. July 20 (Sun) Pioneer Bridal Trail hike - Class A

We will hike from Glacier View Snow Park down the Pioneer Bridal Trail to Little Zigzag Falls and visit the historic Laurel Hill wagon chute portion of the historic Barlow Wagon Trail. Round trip: 6.5 miles, 4 hours. 600 foot elevation gain and loss.
Depart: Glacier View Snow Park at 11 AM. Bring NW Forest or National Parks/Senior Pass.

July 21 (Mon) Frog Lake to Little Crater Lake hike - Class B

We will hike from Frog Lake Parking Lot to Little Crater Lake, 8.2 miles south. This will be a car shuttle. Very little elevation change.
Depart 9:30 AM at Mazama Snow Park. Remember NW parking pass, or federal senior pass.

July 22 (Tue) old PCT to West Fork Falls hike - Class A

Hike old Pacific Crest Trail to West Fork Falls. Discover PCT markers buried in trees. Round trip: 5 miles, 800 feet elevation, 3-4 hours.

July 23 (Wed) Kahneeta Resort Hike and Hot Pool - Class A

Cancelled by leader
We will do a 5 mile RT hike behind the resort on the mesa, and then those who want can spend time in the hot springs pool, so bring your suit, towel, and a camp chair to be comfortable. There are also other activities, such as mini golf, and the Warm Springs museum on Hwy 26. Cost is $5 parking fee. Pool fee for Seniors 55 plus is 410, younger $15, $4 for a water slide. It is an hour drive, 50 miles from Tyee Lodge each way. If the weather is stormy we will have to make other plans.

July 24 (Thur) Fret Creek Trail to Flag Point Lookout - Class B

Hike is about 6.5 miles RT, 1000 ft elevation gain. There is an amazing view from the Flag Point Lookout in the Badger Creek Wilderness. We will start at Fret Creek Trailhead near Fifteen Mile Forest camp. Hike past Oval Lake, see some interesting geology, and head to the lookout for lunch with a fantastic view. As this hike is in the Badger Creek Wilderness area, each group will be limited to 12 people. Mileage Tyee to trail head @30 miles.

July 26 (Sat) Powell Butte Hike - Class A

Powell Butte is a hidden gem on the SE side of Portland and offers deep, lush woods and open, sunny meadow hiking. Deer are often spotted and occasionally a pack of coyotes can be seen. This is a 7.5 mile loop hike with a cumulative elevation gain of 925 ft.

July 26-27 (Sat-Sun) Nesika Lodge open - Host Only

We will have Nesika open for this weekend. The Yoga lady canceled, but we will be open for lodging. Bring your own food and plan a weekend of day hikes and relaxation. Bring a tent and camp on ridge if you would like. No need to pre-register (since you bring your own food). Lodge will be open. Bunks are first come first serve. There is always the porch. Come have a good weekend with friends. If you do not have a key, we can arrange for someone to meet you at the gate on Larch MT road.

July 31 (Thu) Grand Island Bike Ride – Class A

We will cross on the Wheatland Ferry, then through Maude Williamson State Park on to Grand Island. We will have lunch at a small park on Grand Island next to the Willamette River. We will return pretty much by the same route. The terrain is pretty flat and the riding distance about 25 miles depending on weather. There is little car traffic on most of the route. Driving directions to the Wheatland Ferry: South on I5 to the Brooks Exit, turn right and follow signs to Mission State Park. Pass the entrance to the park taking the next left after the park to the Wheatland Ferry.
