Dec 14 (Sat) Hike through Oregon City History – Class A

In 1844 Oregon City was the first incorporated community west of the Missouri River. The first Provisional legislature in Oregon Territory met here in 1843. We will start our walk by visiting the Municipal Elevator then walk the Promenade overlooking industrialized Willamette Falls. Next, hike up to Old Canemah Park along an obscure trail, walk through an old neighborhood and up a hidden staircase to the Children’s Park, visit Canemah Bluff Natural Area, and go as far as the locked gate of the cemetery started in 1864. Return for a brief visit at the Museum of the Oregon Territory (admission free). Walk past more historic homes. Our final stop is optional, but the Singer Hill Café is well worth a visit for the hanging gardens and art gallery if not for a late lunch.
Hike about 5 miles round trip with about 300 feet of elevation gain. Bring a snack or lunch and water. Dress for the weather.
Depart: Gateway Park and Ride at 9:00 AM. Drive about 27 miles round trip. Or meet at the front door of Carnegie Public Library at 9:30. The library is located at Washington St. and 7th St. in Oregon City. Restrooms are available downstairs in the library.

No planned hike for this listing, but others will be leading a New Years Day hike. If you want to hike in with someone, I will try to connect you with someone you can hike in with the day you come up. No indoor running water. Out houses will be used. We all have to share stoves and help with carrying in water. Also, limit is 15 per night so register early. If you want to come up for the day, you do not need to register. The lodge will be warm and welcoming. Fee for day use is $2.00. You will need a sleeping bag, warm clothes, instep crampons or micro spikes. Shoe chains are not recommended. If you wish to do a hike to Larch Mountain on Sunday the 30th with the group you will need a pack, snow gear, good snow shoes, poles, and 8 hours of energy. Include lunch, emergency gear and 10 essentials (flash light). We will be leading daily hikes in the basin. We will have a movie night. No alcohol. Just bring your New Years spirit of love of life.

Dec 28-29 (Sat-Sun) Tyee Open - Host Only

Come join several Reiki Masters and Practitioners for a quiet and relaxed Reiki evening/weekend at Tyee Lodge. Host only. Bring your own food. Cost is $10 members and $15 for nonmembers per night. Stay another night at Tyee Lodge. Tyee will also be open with Host Only on Dec 29 to Dec 30 (Sun-Mon).
The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words - Rei which means "God's Wisdom or the Higher Power" and Ki which is "life force energy." So Reiki is actually "spiritually guided life force energy."
Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by "laying on hands" and is based on the idea that an unseen "life force energy" flows through us. Everyone is welcome!

Trails Trodden

Some Good Memories

Once upon a time, my employer transferred me from Central California (Sierra Club "turf") - to Madras, Oregon. Weekend wanderings around Mount Hood introduced me to the Trails Club, including their lodge, near Government Camp. After finding out that I "relished" the traditionally least desirable lodge chores, I was invited to join. (stories improve with time) There was (still is?) a slow-speed rope tow. Chair lift hills were available nearby and uphill to the North. Thoroughly enjoyed many non-ski season weekend hikes with the Trails Club. I remember that the Trails Clubs' first lodge was in the woods, on the West slope of Mt. Hood. Still appreciated ?
